what i like about them is the break and the extreme gameness.
i also noticed something peculiar about this breed. most of them would have a twisted little hackle feather on the head just below the crown which would look like a cowlick. the ones that have this are really, really good.
i am fielding a full show of the richard bates greys in the world slasher cup in january 2012. they would be basically richard bates greys crossed to my friend dink fair's sweater/cowan roundhead and a few bates/hatch crosses.

I think you are getting alittle carried away, they were good cocks crossed 7/8 Frost, but straight they got beat, just like any other, more than some. And folks have been bring trophies home to central Texas long before you or Adam.

the old folks may call it "senyalado" but looking at this from a scientific perspective, i think unusual traits like this could be the physical manifestation of genetic excellence.
yes, i would be happy to meet up with you at the world slasher cup 2011.
my team, jim clem, jr., howie inafuku of hawaii and myself is fielding three entries, two black japs and one full show of richard bates greys. these fowls were all bred in the braveheart farm in kidapawan city.
the black japs are out of the breeding materials i got from jim after he was arrested by the police in oregon in 2008 because of gamefowls.

Re: Bates Grey
i bought a grey cock from a man in tennessee who said he had bought a dozzen fertile eggs from a farm in texas. the cocki got came out with what i call incuabater toes. all of them are crooked. but it doesnt affect him at all.. that is the only reason he sold him to me and i still had to pay 100 for him like he is. he is SUPPOSE to be pure line bates grey. he has a real upright body and is very braud. i will try to post a picture of him, this ffowl is NOT for sale i am just shareing this with you

Two or three years before he passed away, I met the old man Richard Bates in the airport in Manila. I believe he was on his way to Bacolod, the Alabama of gamefowl breeders in the Philippines.
I proudly told him that I had his Grey line and that they were winning for me.
He flashed a nostalgic smile and told me: "Those greys were one of the best fowls I ever raised."
Bates was very proud of these greys.
But Mike is right. They are not exceptional fought "pure." They are not good-lookers either. They have sharply keeled and long body with big heads.
When crossed, however, they come out very handsome. They will adopt the looks of the other breed but retain the high-breaking trait and deep gameness.
I have no other Grey line in my farm, except for a trio of PCI Greys that was given to me by my friend Jim Clem as a gift.
The PCI Greys have not been bred because even Jim Clem admits that they won't stand a chance against the Richard Bates Grey.
What Jim and I are doing now is trying to cross the Jim Clem Black Japs to the Richard Bates Greys to come up with the Black Grey line.

Re: Bates Grey
Hi there cock mates! sorry for the interruption....
just want to share a pix of my Bates Grey Hen which was acquired in 2009.
she was used last breeding season. unfortunately, only 2 off-springs survived (both female).

Re: Bates Grey
Immanuel, you are so right you guys have to cross them to be better than everybody else around your area , but when it was legal to show roosters in Oklahoma and New Mexico plus Louisiana people where winning with pure Bates ,plus Larry's Kelso's that was 1998,1999,2000,2001,and 2002 ! That's when we started showing fowl, all I'm trying to show everybody is that ,it doesn't matter if you been showing fowl for 100 years or five years if you end up with the right fowl you can win against anybody . Good luck to your up coming derby Immanuel . You do have right stuff !!!

Re: Bates Grey
To Alfaro1955 , hey dude I like that you love your fowl so much and your very proud of them, and your right if you do end up with the right brood fowl you and anybody can win !!! But it starts from getting the right fowl !!!! And if it was legal to show fowl ,it would be more than fun to show everybody that it is hard to beat a gray bird !!!

Re: Bates Grey
To Gallo ,if you buy bad fowl from someone ,damn just don't buy from them anymore, cause in this business everyone is trying to sell thier fowl.. Plus if you say something bad about someone , well how about if you have to go against them in a derby in the Phillipines .. If you talk the talk you better walk the walk !!! PS hey Gallo if your around north Texas, hit me up i'll let you have a few gray stags free !!! And if my grays run off ,LOL !! I'll run after them and catch them myself, cause it sounds like you been chasing after fowl all your life !!!!!

Check out Rick Albright, Black and Blue farm, he has the Bates Grey if I'm not mistaken. 1-435-386-2216 or ralbright@interspan.com.
Good Luck
